Silent Film Showing
Thanhouser: Filmed in Northeast Florida
The Girl of the Grove and The Net
Our third silent movie showing of the year will feature the short film The Girl of the Grove and a longer drama entitled The Net. Filmed in St. Augustine, the charming The Girl of the Grove stars Florence LaBadie; The Net, filmed at Mayport, is a longer tale of the consequences of rescuing a living thing from the sea.
The Thanhouser Company, a leading motion picture company headquartered in New Rochelle, New York, operated in Jacksonville and St. Augustine in the winter of 1912, and The Girl of the Grove was filmed at that time. Later, in 1916 Edwin Thanhouser chose Jacksonville over California as Thanhouser’s winter headquarters. At the same time the Eagle Film Manufacturing Company was investing $40,000 in a motion picture plant in Arlington, Thanhouser spent $30,000 to construct a glass and steel studio and began making motion pictures in Jacksonville. The life of this studio, like that of Eagle’s, was short. The Net was one of the films made during this brief period.
Both films will be shown through the courtesy of Thanhouser Company Film Preservation, Inc., and both feature original film accompaniments.
